How to Look After Your Plants in Summer in South East Queensland

Summer in Brisbane and South East Queensland is hard on plants. Long stretches of heat, high humidity, intense UV and sudden storms all test even the toughest stock. At Ibrox Park Nursery in Burbank, we grow for the trade, so we see what works and what fails across thousands of plants every season. Here are our summer plant tips for keeping stock healthy through the hottest months.
A quick note on who we are
Ibrox Park Nursery is a wholesale nursery. We don’t sell to the public, and we supply only wholesalers and trade customers. If you’re a home gardener, your local retail garden centre is the best place to buy, and many of them stock plants grown right here in South East Queensland. If you’re a retailer, landscaper or trade buyer, we’d love to hear from you.
Water deeply, not often
The most common summer mistake is light, frequent watering. It wets the surface, encourages shallow roots and leaves plants vulnerable when the heat peaks.
Water deeply and less often so moisture reaches the full root zone. Do it early in the morning, ideally before 8am. Watering at midday wastes water to evaporation, and watering at night in humid Brisbane conditions invites fungal disease.
For potted stock, check moisture by hand rather than by routine. Black pots and exposed benches can heat up fast, so a pot that looked fine at 9am can be bone dry by 2pm.
Mulch is your best defence
A good layer of mulch, around 5 to 7 centimetres deep, keeps roots cooler, slows evaporation and suppresses weeds that compete for water. Keep it a few centimetres clear of stems and trunks to prevent rot. Organic mulches such as sugar cane or hardwood chip also break down over time and feed the soil.
Protect plants from heat stress
South East Queensland summers regularly push past 35 degrees, and that’s too much for many species. Watch for curled leaves, scorched edges and wilting that doesn’t recover overnight.
Shade cloth rated between 30 and 50 percent can make a major difference for sensitive and young plants. Group pots together so they shade each other’s roots, and move delicate stock out of afternoon sun where you can. Avoid pruning heavily in peak summer, because fresh growth burns easily.
Feed lightly and choose the right products
Plants under heat stress can’t make good use of heavy fertiliser. Skip high nitrogen feeds during extreme heat, as they push soft growth that struggles to cope. A slow release fertiliser applied in spring, topped up with a seaweed based tonic in summer, helps build resilience without forcing growth.
Prepare for storm season
From November through March, storms are part of life in Brisbane. They can bring welcome rain, but also damaging winds, hail and flash flooding. A little preparation goes a long way.
Before a storm: Move potted plants into sheltered spots, or lay taller pots down so they can’t topple. Stake and tie young trees and tall stock. Clear drains, gutters and drainage points so water doesn’t pool around roots. If you’ve got shade cloth up, make sure it’s securely fastened, because a loose sheet acts like a sail in strong wind.
After a storm: Don’t rush to fix everything at once. Remove broken branches cleanly, but wait to see how plants recover before cutting back hard. Check for waterlogging, since sitting in saturated soil can quickly lead to root rot, especially in clay heavy soils common around Brisbane. Lift pots out of standing water, and let the area drain before watering again.
Hail damage looks dramatic but is often survivable. Plants can recover well once the damage is tidied and conditions stabilise.
Stay ahead of pests and disease
Warm, humid weather is ideal for pests and fungal problems. Keep an eye out for scale, mealybug, aphids and caterpillars, as well as powdery mildew and leaf spot after wet spells.
Good airflow is the simplest prevention. Don’t overcrowd plants, and remove dead or diseased material promptly. Inspect new arrivals before they go in with existing stock. Catching a problem early is far easier than dealing with an outbreak.
Choose plants that suit the climate
The best summer strategy starts with selecting species that thrive in South East Queensland conditions. Native and subtropical varieties are well adapted to our heat, humidity and soil. When you’re stocking a retail nursery or specifying plants for a landscape job, choosing proven performers reduces losses and keeps customers happy long after the sale.
This is where working with a reliable wholesale nursery makes a real difference. Plants grown locally are already acclimatised to Brisbane’s conditions, so they handle the transition from nursery to garden far better than stock shipped in from cooler regions.
Summer plant tips at a glance
Water deeply in the morning. Mulch generously. Shade sensitive plants. Go easy on fertiliser. Secure and drain before storms. Check for pests and disease often. Choose climate suited species.
